Etna, north side
Where the tarmac ends and the pine forest starts
Three rooms in a lava-stone house at 550 metres, among Nerello vines and chestnut trees. Piano Provenzana in twenty minutes, the sea in forty.
The house
Built from the stone Etna threw out in 1923
The house sits in contrada Arrigo, the last one before the road turns to gravel and disappears into the pines. Around it: my grandfather's vineyard, four chestnut trees older than all of us put together, and silence.
The walls are bare lava stone, dark and porous, and in winter they hold the heat better than any insulation. We added underfloor heating, double glazing and a real wood stove in the sitting room — because up here in November the evenings are genuinely cold.
It's me, Turi, and my wife Nuccia. We still make a little wine, and if you turn up in September you're helping with the harvest.

Etna from the window
The north-east crater is visible from the rooms. On active nights people stay out on the terrace watching, and it never gets old.
The stove is lit
From October to April there's a fire in the sitting room. You come back to it after a walk, with a glass of Etna Rosso.
The house wine
Nerello mascalese and cappuccio, a thousand bottles a year, no export label. What we drink is what you drink.

Which trails are open, where the snow holds, which winery actually runs a tasting and which one just sells souvenirs.

Named after the grape, the wood and the stone. All with private bathroom, underfloor heating and wifi. Prices shown are low-season minimums — they rise in summer and over the holidays.

At half past seven, because people usually leave early
Almost everyone who sleeps here has a walk planned, so breakfast is generous and starts early. If you're setting off at six we'll pack it for you.
Durum wheat bread from the village wood-fired oven, chestnut honey from the Nebrodi, baked ricotta, prickly-pear and Etna apple jam, cannoli on Saturdays. The eggs are from our hens and the coffee is made in a moka pot.
If you have a dawn hike, tell us the evening before: we'll leave the packed breakfast in the kitchen with a thermos of coffee.

Contrada Arrigo is four kilometres from the centre of Linguaglossa, on the road climbing towards Piano Provenzana. You can drive right up to the gate — and you'll need the car: nothing else comes up here.

Questions
The things people always ask
Do I need a car?
Yes. We're four kilometres from the village on a country road with no public transport. There's parking inside the property, behind a gate.
Is it cold?
At 550 metres, yes — even on May evenings. The rooms have underfloor heating running October to April and there's a wood stove in the sitting room. Bring a jumper even in summer: the temperature drops ten degrees after dark.
Can I climb Etna from here?
Piano Provenzana is twenty-five minutes by car, and that's where the jeeps and the chairlift leave from. The summit craters require an authorised alpine guide — we know three and we'll book one for you.
Are you open in winter?
All year. January and February are our favourite months: there's snow, you can ski at Provenzana, and in the evening you sit in front of the fire.
