The right hour

What to do, in our opinion

In Sicily it is not only where you go: it is what time you get there. These are ours.

09:00

The lava caves

Grotta dei Lamponi and Grotta del Gelo, where the ice never melts. You need a real guide and half a day: we'll book one, and not the sort who stops at the car park.

05:00

Valle del Bove at dawn

Leave at five, reach the rim as the sun comes out of the sea. It's the walk guests still talk about ten years later.

09:30

Skiing with the sea in view

December to March at Piano Provenzana. Few pistes, few people, and the coast visible from the chairlift. Rental and passes down in the village.

16:00

The Etna wineries

There are about thirty on the north side. Three or four run serious tastings with the producer present. We'll tell you which — and drive you back if you've had a few.

08:45

The Circumetnea railway

The little train that loops the volcano from Randazzo to Giarre: two hours of old lava flows, pistachio groves and villages. In autumn it's worth the fare three times over.

15:00

The chestnuts of Sant'Alfio

The Hundred Horse Chestnut is two thousand years old and still alive. Half an hour by car, with a village festival around it in October.

Book direct: the same room costs you less

With no commission to hand a platform the rate comes down, and there's a bottle of our Etna Rosso in the room when you arrive.
